Forgotten Festivals

INTERESTING FACTS:

Did you know?
There are many Korean Traditional Festivals that have been celebrated among the Koreans for a long time. However, throughout Korea’s long history, festivals have been forsaken and forgotten.

How many traditional festivals of Korea do you know about? Most of you probably only know of the biggest festivals, Chuseok, the Harvest Festival and Seollal, the New Years Day.

Meoseumnal (머슴날)
Meoseumnal is the one of the few forgotten festivals in Korea. Held during the 2nd Lunar month, Meoseumnal is a traditional festival for servants. 'Meoseum' (머슴) means servants and slaves, and 'nal' () means a day in Korean. In many historical dramas, we always see rich people with servants during the Joseon period. This is the day that the masters allowed their servants to celebrate with extra food and money, so as to encourage them to work better for the year’s farming. However, this festival is no longer celebrated since the Meoseum system has been abolished. As such, it’s rare to see a person who remembers this festival.

Yongdeungje (영등제)
Yongdeungje is another festival celebrated during the 2nd Lunar month. It is a day to celebrate Yongdeung (영등, the god of wind) which is believed to descend on earth on the first day of February and ascend on the 20th. Mostly celebrated in Jeju Island and Youngnam district, the people (usually from the farming and fishing sectors) will perform ancestral rituals to appease the wind god. People believe that the year would be fruitful if it is cloudy or it rains on the 20th.

Sambok (삼복)
Falling between the 6th and 7th Lunar month, Sambok is known as the hottest day of the summer. To get through this hottest day, people eat fresh fruits, liquor, and other traditional foods. The most popular dish to be eaten on that day is the Samgyetang (삼계당) (made of a whole young chicken and Korean ginseng). There is a myth that if one bathes in the river or lake on the day of Sambok, that person will grow weak.

Seotdal Geumeum (섣달그믐) was established to celebrate the last day of the year. People believe in driving the evil spirits away and welcoming a new and prosperous year. In the past, palaces and public office people wore masks and played drums to drive away the evil spirits. And because the following day is Seollal (New Year’s Day), most people start preparing the traditional food for Seollal and clean up their houses.

There are much more interesting and fascinating festivals. Check them out online!

Do you know of any other festivals? Any special or unusual traditions performed on that day?

KCC의 첫 한국 여행 : Trip to Korea.

What is Korean Cultural Club if we haven't actually been to the country we rave about every session?
Come this September, it will all change.

After endless hours of careful planning and decision-making, we will be holding a casual trip to the mother of our interests; 대한민국, South Korea.

Since this trip is our first trip, and is a trip that is solely our own event (Ngee Ann Polytechnic is not funding or giving us any form of subsidization), we have requirements.
Requirements as follows;
  1. You will have to be a member of Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Korean Cultural Club.
    • We will not accept participants who are not members of our club. Friends of members, family members, stalkers, fellow fans, pets; if you're not a member, we're sorry but, perhaps you could join us next year when you are members~
  2. If you're not turning 18 by the end of 2013, we're afraid we can't let you come along.
    • This is, however, subject to change. In the event where we do not get good responses from your 선배님들 (seonbaenims/seniors), we will open up applications for the lot of you born in 1996.
  3. This is the most important requirement. Please be INSURED.
    • Insurance is not included. Make sure that you are insured. If you do not have any insurance, and you're still going to go on with this trip, we will not be held responsible for any mishaps.
These are the only two requirements that you would need to be eligible for this trip.
If you can meet these requirements and you are interested, below are the details of this trip.

The guesthouse we will be staying in is a quaint guesthouse in an absolutely amazing neighbourhood called Hyehwa. It's no five star hotel, but it provides an extensive Korean living experience. The guesthouse is surrounded by tiny shops, the subway is only a short walk away and since it's where Sungkyunkwan University is, the area is bustling with youth.

Unlike other tours groups, we want to provide our participants with an authentic Korean travelling experience. We will be travelling as foreigners in Korea, but not as tourists. We will also not be completely planning the trip by ourselves. We want this to be YOUR trip. Once we've gotten hold on the confirmed participants, we will rendezvous and discuss how we want our trip to work out!

Now for the most important bit; the COST of the trip.
The cost includes the following;
  • Flight Tickets
  • Accommodation
  • Transportation
  • Fixed Entrance Fees
The total cost will add up to : SGD $1100

If you are interested, please fill out this form, https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEI4bHZudWVXZHBkWHdiUUFOTWhsN3c6MA

Filling out the application form alone does not secure your spot for this trip. We are accepting up to 15 people for trip. However, if cannot get at least 8 people to join us, the trip will be cancelled. So do ask your fellow KCC friends to come along!

To be list as a confirmed participant (listed here), you will have to make payment of the first $700 by the 15th of July, Monday, 9PM.
If you fail to do so, you will be removed from the list. However, if we manage to get a whooping response for this trip, we will extend the dateline.
Do note that once payment has been made, it is strictly non-refundable.

How can you make payment?
We will open up 4 ways for you to easily make payment.

  1. For POSB/DBS Bank users, you may transfer the $700 to POSB Savings, account number 030-85479-9
  2. For UOB/OCBC Bank users, you may transfer the $700 to UOB Savings Plus Account 358-378-595-5
  3. If you wish to pass the money directly to us, you can do so either through a cheque or cash. Meet-ups will only be based on our schedules. Contact Afrah for more details.
  4. For those with Paypal, you may Paypal the amount to afrah27@msn.com
For Bank Transfers; once you have made the transaction, please send a text message to 90677077 informing us that you have done so, so we can check.

Do ask your parents before making any decisions.
We encourage all to participate if you have the means to!

For any questions or doubts, please do not hesitate to contact our Head of Events and overall in-charge of this event, Afrah. You may contact her through her cell, 90677077, Twitter, @afraaaaah or email her at afrah1015@gmail.com.

Excited? So are we!
Here's to a successful trip to Korea!
